Should I ride the K Capital Challenge?
Why should I ride the K Capital Cup Challenge...?

Well.... where to start.  The K Cup Challenge series is aimed at many types or riders.  If you're the hardened cross country rider and love going head to head with the competition then you won't be dissapointed.  If you're the Sunday warrior who likes to go out with his mates but are not really into the XC scene then this is also perfect for you.  Get out on your bike, enter the race and get around the course just to finish or beat one of your mates.  What about the first time racers?  The guys who get out and ride every weekend but have never really thought about racing at all.  The Challenge is perfect for you.  This is your chance to get out and ride in some new places, find some new tracks, and while you're at it just put your head down and ride with other like minded people.

With the mass start, its long loops, it breaks all the rules of XC racing.   Don't forget that every rider who finishes all three rounds will get a special edition t-shirt which will only be worn by the best of the best on the Irish mountain bike scene.  Last but not least we all get to enjoy three fantastic courses designed by the Godfather of Irish Mountain Biking Robin Seymour.  A man with such passion for good trails that no stone will be left unturned or unmoved to make sure we have the best trails around for you to ride on.

newsGALWAY SET FOR RODENT INFESTATION AS RAT RACE
RETURNS IN 2009

Galway City is preparing to be infested with adventure racers as the ‘Rat Race’ returns to the city in 2009. The team-based event will see the city transformed into an urban sports playground as racers are challenged to take part in a range of physical and mental activities including running, mountain biking, abseiling, climbing and kayaking.

The Galway event, which takes place over a weekend this year, on 5th and 6th September 2009, will be the penultimate race of a 9-date UK and Ireland summer series that will also take in Brighton, Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Gateshead/Newcastle, London, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Saturday’s “Mean Streets” is billed as ‘the team running event with bite’. It is designed predominantly as a running (or walking) event and is open to competitors of all abilities. Participants will have 3 hours to hunt for up to 25 checkpoints hidden all over the city centre. Sunday is a bike-based adventure that takes teams further out towards the city limits and encompasses more overt adventure pursuit, such as kayaking, abseiling and navigation.

In the inaugural 2008 Galway City Rat Race the activities included abseiling inside Eyre Square Shopping centre, kayaking on the River Corrib, clambering through mud and trees blind-folded in Barna woods and jumping off the Blackrock diving boards on Salthill promenade.

This year’s races will start and finish in a specially constructed adventure village in the heart of the city, in Eyre Square. The event village features well-earned food and drink for competitors and spectators alike, alongside live music plus adventure exhibits and activities for the public to try their hand at.

Jim Mee, MD of event organisers Detail Events commenting on Galway City’s suitability to hold the event said; “Galway has the perfect infrastructure to hold a Rat Race. As well as a number of unusual spots and iconic locations, Galway is a very green city with plenty of parks. Of course there is plenty of water too, which is great for this sort of activity. Our planners are already working on the course and it will be significantly different to last year so anyone who took part in last year’s race shouldn’t think that they know what to expect!”

Commenting on the announcement of the return of Rat Race, Brian Quinn, Product Market & Development Manager, Failte Ireland West, said “Adventure racing is widely reported to be one of the fastest growing sports in the world and we at Failte Ireland West are very keen to tap into the full potential of the Adventure Holidays market. This event will attract more International T.V and press coverage, further promoting the West of Ireland as an outdoor sports destination, placing the region in a strategically important position as Ireland’s adventure playground”.

He continued: “Outdoor and Adventure events such as this are paramount to Failte Ireland West’s commitment to developing the region as the primary outdoor destination in Ireland.”

Mc Convey signs for Focus De-Brink Ten Tusscher
Irish cyclist Connor Mc Convey has overcome the recent problems with the now non existent Felt MTB trade team by immediately signing with the Dutch based team Focus De-Brink Ten Tusscher.
Team manager Jan Ten Tusscher, was able to recruit two former Team Felt racers into his young mountain bike team.
In 2008 Ten Tusscher was the man behind the scenes of the Cannondale-Vredestein team where Jakob Fuglsang raced his final year in mountain biking and Roel Paulissen became world marathon champion.

By recruiting the 20-year-old Irish mountain biker Connor Mc Convey and the 24-year-old Swedish racer Emil Lindgren, Ten Tusscher seems to be already preparing for the 2010 season to surprise the world again with a new team...
"As a team we are taking the next step sooner than expected, admits the team manager, "There was an unique opportunity to recruit these young and talented racers. I've spotted Connor long before now! Aged 20 and already one of the top 5 U23 riders in the world... Emil had a good beginning of the season and I'm thinking he may become a very consistent top racer. Besides that, I like the Northern-European way of thinking: all no-nonsense guys."

Stolen track bikes - keep an eye out
Track bikes were stolen recently from Sundrive track in Dublin.  Please keep an eye out for this around as they will be pretty easy to spot.  These are green Dolan fixed wheel track bikes, which will make them difficult enough for whoever stole them to get rid of. There is a possibilty that they will be dismantled and sold off in parts, so if anybody gets offered or hears of someone flogging off sets of bars, single chian ring chainsets etc, please contact us here at the site or ring your local Garda station.  A lot of time and money has gone into providing these bikes for anyone to give the track a try and information leading to the recovery of these would be much appriciated.

Bikes look similar to this.

Big blow for Connor McConvey

Felt GmbH ended its sponsorship, effective immediately, of the Felt International Mountain Bike Team, which is owned and operated by AB ProCycling and managed by Dr. Antonio Brozzu. Felt cited "recent financial problems between AB ProCycling and the team" which "left riders only partially paid and the program in operational distress."

"We regret this early cancellation, but under the circumstances it was unavoidable. Once it was clear that AB ProCycling had stopped contributing to the team, every attempt was made between Felt and other industry sponsors to salvage the program and make up the difference," said Michael Muellmann, CEO of Felt. "However, despite our best efforts we simply could not make it happen. We wish all of the team members the very best for the future."

The Felt team most recently included the following riders: Joel Graf, Blaza Klemencic, Kashi Leuchs, Emil Lindgren, Connor McConvey, Daniele Mensi and Juri Ragnoli.

Hopefully with his recent good results Connor will pick up another ride very soon.

Mc Convey 3rd U23 in Heubach
Connor Mc Convey was 3rd in a top class U23 field in Heubach, Germany at the week-end. The race was a categorised HC which is one step down from a World cup.

Connor is delighted with his result and was pleased with his form

"The race was hard and everyone went nuts from the start. It took me a little while to get my rhythm but I Felt very strong.

I was in second place for 4 laps but got beaten on the sprint. I feel that this was a good preparation for the World Cup in Madrid

at the week-end and then I will come home and take a break for a couple of days."
